Ross Meurant - History


About Image Twenty one years in New Zealand Police. Service included AOS Para military unit; detective Criminal Investigation Branch; Second in command elite Riot Unit; commissioned officer in charge VIP security and criminal intelligence section. Subsequently a Member of Parliament in New Zealand for 9 years.

Service included Member of the Executive of NZ as Under Secretary (i.e. junior minister) Agriculture & Forestry; Member Cabinet Committee Commerce, Industry & Environment; Chair Select Committee: Fishing, Forestry, Agriculture Horticulture; Member Select Committee Government Restructuring (privatization State assets).

  • During his parliamentary service Ross was closely involved with restructuring the fishing industry introducing an in-perpetuity transferable property right to fishing entitlements.
  • Known as QMS, this system replaced annualized bureaucratic licensing with the immediate effect to underpin private sector recapitalisation of the fishing industry and to enhance sustainable fisheries management plans for the country.
  • International business experience over several years living in Africa, the Balkans, East Europe and the Middle East.
  • As an MP he was also involved in negotiations for live sheep exports to Iran and sale of State owned forestry rights to private tender.

Post Parliament

For a decade after leaving parliament Ross was engaged by major New Zealand fishing companies as a consultant.

For a two years Ross was a director of a Russian bank domiciled in Vanuatu.

Between 2000 & 2005 he was also engaged by Parliamentary Services as an adviser on trade and taxation to the leader of a political party.

In 2005 Ross became a domicile abroad progressively establishing a network of commerce and financiers from: Croatia to Harare - Gibraltar to Moscow - Morocco to Prague - U.A.E. to Damascus.

Hobbies

Economics and politics.

Ross is a competent equestrian (hunting to hounds).

Kayaking, water skiing, swimming and karate are his preferred interests.
